How Does One Become a Cabinet Minister?

  1. Eligibility for Membership: To become a Cabinet Minister, one must be eligible to be a Member of Parliament (MP). This means being an Indian citizen, at least 25 years old for the Lok Sabha and 30 years old for the Rajya Sabha, and meeting other constitutional requirements.
  2. Member of Parliament: If already an MP at the time of appointment, the individual can serve as a Cabinet Minister without issue.
  3. Membership Requirement: If the appointed Cabinet Minister is not an MP at the time of appointment, they must become a member of either the Lok Sabha or the Rajya Sabha within six months.
  4. Consequences of Failure: If the newly appointed Cabinet Minister does not secure membership in either house within six months, they must leave their post.
